3 Self-care Ideas Worthy of Your TimeOn June 27, 2017 by Samantha Jean
You may be a go-getter mom hustling after your munchkins, a businesswoman killing it at the office, or maybe you’re just a little bit overtired from the constant flurry of everyday life. If you are none of these things and somehow manage to constantly be on the move and never get tired, then congratulations. You’re an alien and I am jealous of you. But if you are like 99 percent of the rest of the world, you have or are learning to strike a balance between all your life’s activities and obligations and having just a tiny bit of time to yourself. No matter what your form of busy looks like, we can all use a little bit of ‘me’ time to help us take a break and refresh ourselves.
I, myself, am a businesswoman who has a problem with multi-tasking every second of every day, who is fresh from divorce and caters to an always-energetic two-year old. So, when the opportunities arise to have a little downtime by myself, I try to make the most of them—not necessarily by hopping on a plane and taking a luxurious vacation (although that would be quite lovely)—but by doing some simple things that help me unwind and feel just plain awesome.
After my divorce, I read a ton about self-care. I now have days where I don’t get to spend a lot of time with my little girl, so I have to fill that time. While I mostly try to run my errands, do my chores, and fill that time with things I’d rather not do on my time with my daughter, I do sneak in the occasional indulgence. New to “me time”? No problem! Let me share some of my favorite downtime activities that you can try this week. Tip: each of these pairs well with wine. 🙂
Taking a hot bath
I feel like this is pretty self-explanatory, but honestly – have you ever just filled the tub completely full, tossed in a bath bomb, poured yourself some wine, grabbed your iPad, and took a hot bubble bath? If not, you are missing out. No, seriously—I mean it. Spas haven’t offered bath kurs and steam showers for years just for the kick of it. Warm water = so damn relaxing. And something about ridiculously amazing smelling bath bombs or fizzies or whatever just do it for me. Super soft skin and the smell of mangoes and lilacs with a hint of cotton candy, rainbows and happiness? Sold. I could spend hours in the tub watching Netflix, drinking my moscato, and fighting off a good nap. It’s also maybe a girl thing, but it feels like a mini pampering session, and I think we could all use those more often than not. Dim the lights, add some candles, pour yourself a drink, or play some tunes, but seriously. Do this. Do this now.
Indulge in some good food
Maybe this is me encouraging a bad habit, but I absolutely love me some good food. Good snacks. Good desserts. Good over-sized dinners full of carbs. Yes, sweets (my personal weakness) fried foods, and other naughty comfort-eats are delicious and work for this, but I truly mean anything you think is good food. My current favorite splurge? Sushi. I’ve been on such a kick, and it’s clean and I don’t feel like I have cheated myself afterward. Also – wine. That one is probably not as clean, but hey. And a nice, hot latte. Or a slice of cheesecake? Ok, you get my point. But there is nothing wrong with treating yourself to something you want, and on the nights when I don’t have a little one to cook for, I do thoroughly enjoy kicking back on the couch with some good eats, no matter what that ends up being. Food just makes people happy.
Listen to music
This will forever be my strongest advocacy. When I was little, my mom bought me a Walkman, and then over time I graduated to a CD player, and eventually progressed to an iPod Touch (still the best Christmas gift I have ever received to this day). I can honestly say that to whomever I leave my iPod to when I die, you were the one I loved most. Because that thing carries on it my life. I think I am truly one of the top 100 funders of iTunes in the whole, entire world, which isn’t a super fantastic thing to brag about. But next time you have some free time, put your headphones in! Whether you meditate, go for a run, or just dance around the house in your underwear while you do some chores doesn’t matter. Music can get you pumped up, make you feel zen, or just provide you an opportunity to escape it all. I totally get lost in it and without it, I can guarantee I would be a whole lot more stressed on a regular basis, which would be great for no one. There’s also something really fun about belting out lyrics to a song you have turned up way too loud while you’re driving in your car. I think we are all guilty of knowing this.
Everyone has their own thing for de-stressing, relaxing and just enjoying some personal time. If you haven’t already used some of these self-care ideas, I hope you find some time to try them out!
